Does Brazilian Waxing Hurt?

An Honest Answer From Waxers Who Do This All Day

Let’s just get this out of the way right now.
Yes, a Brazilian wax can hurt.

There. We said it. No lies. No sugar coating. No pretending it feels like a gentle breeze and a compliment. But before you close this tab and go back to shaving for the rest of your life, stay with us. Because the real answer is a lot more nuanced, way less dramatic, and honestly not nearly as bad as your brain is making it.

We’re the owners of Bare Beauty Wax Studio, licensed estheticians in Wisconsin, and we’ve been waxing Brazilians for five years straight. Like… all day. Every day. At this point, giving a Brazilian wax is as normal to us as waxing eyebrows. Bodies are bodies. Nothing is awkward. Nothing is shocking. Nothing phases us. We promise we are far more relaxed about this than you are.

So let’s talk about pain. Real pain. Not internet horror stories written by someone who went once, shaved the night before, showed up late, and ignored all aftercare instructions.

Why Brazilian Waxing Has a Reputation for Being Painful

Brazilian waxing involves removing hair from a very sensitive area. There are nerve endings. There is skin that doesn’t usually get disturbed. Your body is not thrilled about it the first time. That’s just biology.

But the reputation Brazilian waxing has online is wildly exaggerated. Most of what you read comes from people who were unprepared, went to inexperienced waxers, or had no idea what to expect. Pain loves a dramatic narrator.

The truth is this. The pain is quick. It is controlled. It does not last. And with proper technique, preparation, and aftercare, it becomes very manageable very fast.

First Time vs Maintenance Brazilians

This part matters a lot.

Your first Brazilian wax will always be the most uncomfortable. There’s more hair. The hair is stronger. Your skin hasn’t adjusted yet. Your brain is panicking about something it’s never done before.

That’s why first time Brazilian appointments with us are scheduled for 30 minutes. We spend extra time educating you, explaining what’s happening, checking in, and sending you home with an aftercare kit to help your skin recover properly. We charge a little more for first time Brazilians for these reasons. You’re getting more time, more care, and more education.

Maintenance Brazilians are a different story entirely. Those are scheduled for 20 minutes and honestly usually don’t even take that long. When you come back consistently within a 4 to 6 week timeline, the hair grows back finer, sparser, and easier to remove. Less hair equals less discomfort. Simple math.

Most clients are shocked by how much easier their second and third wax feels and how quickly they are in and out of our space.

How Painful Is It Really on a Scale

If we had to be blunt, because that’s our thing, most clients describe the pain as sharp but quick. Think ripping off a band aid, not being tortured for an hour.

You feel the pull. You feel a moment of “oh wow, okay.” And then it’s gone. The skin calms down almost immediately. We’re not hovering over one strip for ten minutes. We work efficiently and intentionally because dragging it out actually makes it worse.

Also, the pain is not constant. Some areas are more sensitive than others. Some pulls you barely notice. Some pulls get a very honest reaction and, quite often, a giggle. All of it is normal.

What We Do to Minimize Discomfort

This is where experience really matters.

We use both hard and soft wax depending on the area and your hair type. We don’t believe in a one wax fits all approach. Different hair needs different techniques.

We also have every client help pull their skin taut. This makes a massive difference! Tight skin equals less tugging and cleaner removal. We guide you through breathing. We tell you when to inhale and exhale. We distract you with conversation. And yes, we have a couple other tricks up our sleeve that come from doing this thousands of times.

Pain management during a Brazilian is not about numbing creams and gimmicks. It’s about technique, timing, and communication. That’s where experienced waxers shine.

Does Hair Length Affect Pain

Absolutely. And this is where people accidentally make it worse for themselves.

Minimum hair length for a Brazilian wax is about the size of a grain of rice. That’s usually around three weeks after your last shave. Hair that is too short doesn’t grip the wax properly. Hair that is too long can feel more uncomfortable.

We prefer that clients do not trim on their own. Uneven trimming can actually increase discomfort. If trimming is needed, we will do it professionally so everything is even and efficient. Most times, clients don’t even realize when we have trimmed. It’s a quick, easy snip-snip, toss, move along step in our process. We will keep talking the entire time and you’ll be none the wiser.

Trust us on this one.

Mental Pain Is Half the Battle

We see this every day. The anticipation is often worse than the actual wax.

Your brain has been spiraling since the moment you booked. You’ve imagined awkward silence. You’ve worried about what we’ll think, “is she judging me?”. You’ve googled things that made it worse.

Here’s the reality. We are focused on your skin, your hair growth, and getting you in and out quickly and comfortably. That’s it. We are not judging your body. We are not shocked by anatomy or normal body things. We are not thinking about anything other than doing our job well. We barely even register sweat, c-section scars, hair on other parts of your body, your pedicure situation, we truly don’t care about any of that.

Brazilian waxing is boring to us in the best way.

What About After the Wax

Aftercare plays a huge role in how your skin feels after and how your next wax will feel.

We recommend avoiding workouts, sex, hot tubs, baths, and tanning for 24 to 48 hours. Your skin needs time to calm down. After 48 hours, start exfoliating regularly two to three times a week. Physical exfoliation or chemical exfoliation both work. Whatever works for you, is fine by us.

We send every first time Brazilian client home with an aftercare kit that includes products to help care for your freshly smoothed skin. These products help reduce ingrowns, soothe the skin, and keep everything looking and feeling better between appointments. If you like them, we have more available for purchase during your second appointment.

Consistent aftercare equals easier future waxes. Every single time.

Does It Get Easier

Yes. Unequivocally yes.

Clients who stick to a regular waxing schedule are usually the ones laughing during their appointments. The hair grows back slower and finer. The skin adjusts. The discomfort decreases dramatically.

This is why maintenance Brazilians cost less and take less time. Your body adapts. The process becomes routine. It stops being a big scary thing and starts being just another self care appointment.

A Quick Note on Timing and Policies

Because our Brazilian appointments are only 20 minutes for maintenance, timing matters. We have a 10 minute late policy. If you’re late and have multiple services booked, we’ll get done as much as we can in the remaining time.

Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice, no shows, or arriving more than 10 minutes late are charged 50 percent of the booked services. Not because we’re mean. Because this is how small service based businesses survive.

Also, please do not call us. We hate phone calls. Texting or booking online is the way to go.

Who We See in the Studio

We serve clients from Milton, Janesville, Whitewater, Fort Atkinson, Evansville and more, who are tired of shaving, tired of irritation, and ready for better results.

If you’re nervous, we get it. That’s most people the first time. But if you want honest answers, experienced hands, and waxers who truly could not care less about seeing your body, you’re in the right place.
