Brazilian Waxing 101: Everything You’re Too Afraid to Ask but Definitely Googled

If your search history includes things like “how bad is a Brazilian wax really,” “is Brazilian waxing awkward,” or “what if I panic and leave,” welcome. You’re in good company.

We’re the owners of Bare Beauty Wax Studio, licensed estheticians in Wisconsin, and we’ve been doing Brazilian waxes for five years straight. Like, all day straight. At this point, giving a Brazilian wax is as routine to us as waxing eyebrows. Seeing bodies is normal. Anatomy is boring. Nothing about your appointment is going to shock or emotionally impact us.

So let’s go ahead and answer the questions you’re definitely Googling but might not want to say out loud.

What Is a Brazilian Wax, Really

A Brazilian wax removes hair from the front, the back, and everything in between. Some clients leave a little hair. Some leave none. That part is completely up to you and something we’ll talk through during your appointment.

There is no “right” choice. There is only what you’re comfortable with.

If you’re worried about asking for what you want, don’t be! We answer these questions all day. This is not our first rodeo.

Yes, You’ll Be Naked From the Waist Down

Let’s not dance around this part.

You’ll undress from the waist down and lie on the table. We’ll guide you through positioning and let you know what’s happening before anything happens. There are no surprises. No awkward hovering. No silent judgment.

This is a professional service. It is clinical, efficient, and about as dramatic as a haircut.

Does It Hurt or Are People Being Dramatic Online

Short answer. Yes, it can hurt a little.

Longer answer. The pain is quick, controlled, and very temporary. It is not constant. It does not build. It does not linger.

Most of the horror stories you read come from people who were unprepared, went somewhere inexperienced, shaved the night before, or ignored all aftercare. Brazilian waxing gets a bad reputation because fear spreads faster than reality.

We work efficiently because dragging it out makes it worse. We’ll guide your breathing, have you help pull your skin taut, and distract you as much as possible. Tight skin equals cleaner removal and less discomfort. And yes, after five years of doing this nonstop, we have a few extra tricks up our sleeve that we don’t need to advertise.

Most first timers finish and immediately say, “That was not nearly as bad as I thought.”

How Long Does a Brazilian Wax Take

First time Brazilian appointments are scheduled for 30 minutes. Not because the wax itself takes that long, but because we spend extra time explaining things, checking in, and making sure you feel comfortable.

Maintenance Brazilians are booked for 20 minutes and usually don’t even take that long. When you wax consistently within a 4 to 6 week timeline, the hair grows back finer and easier to remove. Less hair means faster appointments and less discomfort.

This is also why maintenance appointments cost less. Your body adapts.

Hair Length Matters More Than You Think

Minimum hair length for a Brazilian wax is about the size of a grain of rice. For most people, that’s roughly three weeks after shaving.

Too short and the wax can’t grip properly. Too long is usually fine.

We strongly prefer that you do not trim at home. Uneven trimming makes the wax less efficient and can actually increase discomfort. If trimming is needed, we’ll handle it professionally so everything is even and clean.

This is one of those times where doing less is doing more.

Should You Shower Before Your Appointment

Please come clean. That’s really all we ask.

You do not need to do anything extreme. No special scrubs. No harsh products. Just basic hygiene. If you head to see us directly from work, stop in our restroom. We always have personal wipes and tampons available for you to freshen up before your wax.

And no, we are not judging you if you shaved before deciding to wax, if you sweat on the way in, or if your body does normal human body things. This is not our first day.

What About Being on Your Period

You can still get a Brazilian wax while on your period! Just wear a tampon or menstrual cup. That’s it. Again, we have tampons and personal wipes available in our restroom for your use.

If you’re extremely uncomfortable or crampy, rescheduling might be better for you. But from our side, it’s completely manageable.

Why First-Time Brazilians Cost a Little More

We’re very transparent about this.

First time Brazilian waxes are priced slightly higher because we spend more time with you. We educate you on hair growth, aftercare, and how to get the best long term results. We also send you home with an aftercare kit to help your skin calm down properly.

If you continue returning within a 4 to 6 week timeline, the price drops for maintenance Brazilians. Those appointments are quicker, easier, and more routine.

Consistency matters in waxing. A lot.

Aftercare Is Not Optional

Right after your wax, your skin might look a little red or feel warm. That’s normal and usually calms down quickly.

For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid workouts, sex, hot tubs, baths, and tanning. Your skin needs time to recover.

After 48 hours, start exfoliating regularly two to three times a week. Physical exfoliation or chemical exfoliation both work. Whatever works, works.

We sell aftercare products and include some of them in our first time Brazilian aftercare kits. Things like ingrown hair spray serum, moisturizing oil, and exfoliating cloths make a noticeable difference in preventing ingrowns and keeping skin smooth between appointments.

Good aftercare equals easier future waxes. Every time. Waxing is about 20% on our shoulders, with 80% being aftercare. This is why we take our time to explain to you exactly what you need to do at home, to get the best possible results.

Does It Get Easier or Is This Your Life Now

It absolutely gets easier.

Clients who wax consistently have finer regrowth, less irritation, and significantly less discomfort. By the second or third appointment, most of the fear is gone. By the fourth, it’s just another self care appointment.

This is why so many people switch to waxing permanently once they start.

Let’s Talk About Awkwardness

Here’s the truth.

A Brazilian wax is only awkward if the waxer makes it awkward. We don’t. To us, it’s no different than eyebrows. We are focused on your skin, hair growth, and technique. That’s it.

You do not need to fill silence. You do not need to explain your body. You do not need to apologize for being nervous.

You’re allowed to just exist on the table.

Timing and Policies Matter More Than People Think

Maintenance Brazilian appointments are booked for 20 minutes. Because of that, we have a 10 minute late policy. If you’re late and have multiple services booked, we’ll get done as much as we can in the remaining time.

Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice, no shows, or arriving more than 10 minutes late are charged 50 percent of the booked services. This isn’t about being strict. It’s about respecting time in a small service based business.

Also, please don’t call us. We truly hate phone calls. Book online or text us if needed.

Who We See Every Day

We work with Brazilian waxing clients from Milton, Janesville, Beloit, Jefferson, Lake Geneva, Madison, Whitewater, Fort Atkinson, and Evansville who are tired of shaving, tired of irritation, and ready for better results.

Most of them were nervous their first time. Almost all of them say they wish they had done it sooner.

The Bottom Line

Brazilian waxing is not a secret club you need to mentally prepare for months to join. It’s a professional service done by licensed estheticians who have seen everything and think none of it is weird.

It’s quick. It’s manageable. It gets easier. And when done correctly, it delivers results shaving never will.

If you’re done Googling and ready to actually experience it, book online and let us take it from there.
