What Not to Do Before Your Brazilian Wax (From a Licensed Esthetician Who Wants This to Go Well)

A Brazilian wax can be quick, smooth (literally), and totally manageable… if you don’t sabotage yourself beforehand.

As a licensed esthetician, I can tell you this with love: most bad waxing experiences don’t happen because of the wax—they happen because of what clients unknowingly do before they walk in the door.

So let’s save your skin (and your sanity) and talk about what not to do before your Brazilian wax. No shaming, no scare tactics—just honest advice from someone who does this all day.

1. Don’t Shave (Yes, Even “Just a Little”)

This is the biggest one.

Wax needs hair to grab. If you shave—even a few days before—your hair may be:

  • Too short for the wax to remove

  • Patchy and uneven

  • More likely to break instead of pulling from the root

Ideally, hair should be about ¼ inch long (roughly the length of a grain of rice).

If you’ve already shaved and you’re unsure if there’s enough growth, don’t panic—just let your esthetician know. We’ll assess and guide you.

2. Don’t Exfoliate the Day Of

Exfoliating is great… just not right before your appointment.

Scrubs, exfoliating gloves, dry brushing, and chemical exfoliants can leave your skin:

  • Extra sensitive

  • Slightly inflamed

  • More prone to irritation

That’s not the energy we want going into a Brazilian wax.

👉 Stop exfoliating 24–48 hours before your appointment.

3. Don’t Use Retinol or Strong Actives Beforehand

This one is very important and often overlooked.

Avoid using products with:

  • Retinol or retinoids

  • Glycolic, salicylic, or lactic acid

  • Prescription acne treatments

Using these too close to your wax can increase the risk of:

  • Skin lifting

  • Burning

  • Excessive irritation

When in doubt, stop active ingredients at least 5–7 days before waxing and always tell your esthetician what you’re using.

4. Don’t Come in Sunburned or Freshly Tanned

If your skin is sunburned or freshly tanned, it is already compromised.

Waxing over irritated skin can cause:

  • Increased pain

  • Prolonged redness

  • Potential damage to the skin barrier

If you’ve had significant sun exposure or a recent spray tan, let your esthetician know before your appointment.

5. Don’t Arrive Late or Rushed

Brazilian waxing works best when:

  • You’re calm

  • Your body isn’t tense

  • We’re not racing the clock

Arriving stressed, flustered, or late can make the experience feel more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

Give yourself time to breathe, use the restroom, and get settled.

6. Don’t Skip Showering (But Also Don’t Overdo It)

Please come clean—but no need to scrub like you’re preparing for surgery.

A normal shower is perfect.

Avoid:

  • Heavy oils or lotions on the area

  • Harsh antibacterial soaps

  • Over-washing that leaves skin dry or irritated

Clean, calm skin is the goal.

7. Don’t Show Up Hungry or Dehydrated

Low blood sugar can:

  • Increase pain sensitivity

  • Make you feel lightheaded

  • Turn a quick wax into an unpleasant experience

Eat a light meal or snack beforehand and drink water. Your body will thank you.

8. Don’t Be Afraid to Communicate

This one isn’t about products—it’s about mindset.

Don’t:

  • Suffer in silence

  • Hold your breath the entire appointment

  • Assume discomfort is something you just have to endure

Tell your esthetician if:

  • You’re nervous

  • You’re on your period

  • You’re feeling extra sensitive

  • You need a moment

Communication helps us help you.

9. Don’t Plan a Big Event Immediately After

Your skin needs time to calm down.

Avoid scheduling your Brazilian wax right before:

  • A beach day

  • A workout class

  • A hot date (give it a day!)

Redness and sensitivity are normal and temporary—but planning ahead makes everything smoother.

10. Don’t Panic—Your Esthetician Has Seen It All

You don’t need to:

  • Apologize for your body

  • Feel embarrassed about hair growth

  • Worry about being judged

Brazilian waxing is our job. We do it professionally, efficiently, and without judgment.

Your job is simply to show up prepared and relaxed.

The Bottom Line

A great Brazilian wax starts before you ever hit the table.

Avoid shaving, over‑exfoliating, harsh products, sun exposure, and unnecessary stress—and your skin will have a much better experience.

When in doubt, ask. Your esthetician wants your wax to be as smooth, comfortable, and effective as possible.

A little prep goes a long way—and your skin will show it. 💗
