Can You Get a Brazilian Wax on Your Period? Yes, Let’s Talk
If you’ve ever looked at your waxing appointment reminder, looked at your period tracking app, and immediately thought, “You have got to be kidding me,” welcome.
This happens all the time.
You book your Brazilian wax feeling productive and organized, and then a few days before your appointment your uterus decides to throw a little surprise party and suddenly you’re wondering if you need to reschedule, if it’s gross, if it’s awkward, or if your waxer is silently hoping you cancel.
We’re not.
We’re the owners of Bare Beauty Wax Studio in Milton, Wisconsin, and we get this question constantly. So let’s make this easy.
Yes, you can absolutely get a Brazilian wax while you’re on your period.
No, it is not the end of the world.
No, we are not shocked by the existence of a menstrual cycle.
And no, this is not one of those things where we’re going to act cool about it online and then secretly dread it in the treatment room. We genuinely do not care in the dramatic way you think we do. At this point, giving a Brazilian wax is as routine to us as waxing eyebrows. Different body part, same level of emotional reaction, which is basically none.
That said, there are a few things you should know if your appointment lands during your period, because while it’s completely doable, there are some ways to make it easier on yourself and a couple situations where rescheduling might honestly be the better move.
First, Let’s Address the Main Question: Is It Allowed?
Yes. If you’re on your period, you can still come in for your Brazilian wax.
The only thing we ask is that you wear a tampon or a menstrual cup. That’s it. Not because we’re trying to be difficult, but because it makes the appointment cleaner, easier, and more comfortable for everyone involved. Pads are not practical for a Brazilian. We’re not performing gymnastics around a winged maxi pad and pretending it’s a good system. It’s not.
If you use tampons or a cup, great. Keep it simple and come to your appointment like normal.
If you don’t use either of those and you’re actively bleeding, that’s when it may make more sense to reschedule. Not because your period is shameful or taboo, but because the logistics of a Brazilian wax without internal period protection are, frankly, annoying and not worth forcing.
Is It More Painful on Your Period?
Potentially, yes. But nothing an Ibuprofen can’t help.
This is the part where people get mad because they wanted us to say, “No babe, it’s exactly the same, your uterus is just being dramatic.” Unfortunately, that’s not always how it works.
A lot of people are more sensitive right before or a few days after their period because hormones can make the skin and nervous system feel a little more reactive. So if you already tend to feel crampy, bloated, overstimulated, or generally one minor inconvenience away from snapping at an innocent person in the grocery store, your Brazilian may feel a little more intense than it would on a random Tuesday in the middle of your cycle.
Not horrifying. Not unmanageable. Just… less fun.
If you’ve had Brazilians before, you may notice a difference. If it’s your first one, you won’t really have anything to compare it to, so honestly, ignorance might be bliss.
So Should You Reschedule?
Maybe. But not automatically.
If your period doesn’t bother you much and you’re okay wearing a tampon or cup, there’s no real reason to move the appointment. Plenty of our clients come in on their period and it’s completely fine.
If you’re someone who gets really crampy, really sensitive, or generally feels like your body is trying to ruin your life for two days every month, then yes, you may be happier rescheduling if your timing allows. Not because you can’t handle it, but because if you already know you’re going to feel miserable, there’s no prize for powering through a Brazilian on top of that.
We’re very pro not making your life harder than it needs to be.
That said, we also know real life doesn’t always line up perfectly. Sometimes your wax is scheduled before vacation, before an event, before a trip, or just at the only time you could get in. If you need to keep the appointment, keep the appointment. We’re not going to make it weird.
Are We Grossed Out by It? No. Truly.
We know this is one of the biggest concerns, so let’s just say it plainly.
No, we are not grossed out by waxing someone on their period.
We are licensed estheticians. We work with skin, hair, bodies, sweat, ingrowns, breakouts, and yes, sometimes periods. If the presence of normal bodily functions was enough to rattle us, we picked the wrong career.
You do not need to apologize 14 times when you walk in. You do not need to whisper it to us like you’re confessing a crime. You do not need to look horrified and say, “I’m so sorry, I just started and I didn’t know what to do.”
Just tell us if you feel like we need to know, wear a tampon or cup, and we move on with our lives.
That’s really it.
If You’re Already Nervous About Your First Brazilian, Does Your Period Make It Worse?
Mentally? Sometimes, yes.
If it’s your first Brazilian and you’re also on your period, you may feel like you’ve accidentally stacked two vulnerable experiences on top of each other and now you’re one inconvenience away from canceling the whole thing and moving to another state.
We get it.
A first time Brazilian already feels like a big deal when you’ve never done it before. Add period cramps, bloating, and the general emotional instability that can come with your cycle, and suddenly the whole thing feels a lot more dramatic than it probably needs to be.
But here’s the good news. A Brazilian at Bare Beauty is not some shocking, chaotic event we’re all pretending is normal. We do this all day. We’ll walk you through it. We’ll tell you when to help pull the skin taut, when to breathe, and we’ll distract you through the parts that tend to make people tense up. We’re not expecting you to show up feeling relaxed and spiritually centered. We know you’re human.
And honestly, once the appointment starts, most people realize they were panicking way harder than necessary.
Is There Anything You Should Do Differently If You’re Waxing on Your Period?
A little bit, yes.
Nothing dramatic, but if you want to make the appointment go as smoothly as possible, here’s what we’d recommend.
First, wear a fresh tampon or cup to the appointment. Not one that’s been hanging on for dear life all day. Start clean, be comfortable, and save everyone the stress.
Second, if you know you’re more sensitive on your period, take that into account mentally. Don’t book your first ever Brazilian on the heaviest, crampiest day of your cycle and then act betrayed when you’re not having the time of your life. You can absolutely still come in, but it helps to have realistic expectations.
Third, if you’re someone who gets lightheaded, crampy, or generally delicate during your period, eat beforehand and drink some water. A Brazilian is not the moment to discover you’ve been surviving on iced coffee and pure anxiety.
And finally, just tell us if you’re on your period. Not because we need a full briefing, but because if you’re feeling extra sensitive, crampy, or uncomfortable, it’s helpful for us to know what kind of day you’re having.
Will the Wax Still Work the Same?
Yes. Your period does not somehow cancel out the wax.
If your hair is long enough and your skin is in good shape, the wax works the same. Your body does not shut down the laws of hair removal because your cycle showed up. The only real difference is that you may feel more sensitive during the appointment, and depending on how you personally feel on your period, you may just be less thrilled to be there.
Which honestly is fair.
What If You Start Your Period Unexpectedly Right Before the Appointment?
Again, not the end of the world.
If you can throw in a tampon or cup and still make it to the appointment comfortably, great. Come in. If it’s one of those situations where your body has chosen violence, you feel awful, and the thought of lying on a wax table sounds deeply offensive, then reschedule if you need to.
The main thing we don’t want is for clients to panic and no show because they assume period equals automatic cancellation. It doesn’t.
We would much rather you message us and ask than disappear into the void because you got your period and convinced yourself we’d be horrified.
We won’t be horrified. We might be annoyed if you no show, though. Different issue.
Let’s Talk About the Real Awkward Part: Telling Your Waxer
We promise this is not a dramatic conversation.
You do not need a script. You do not need to text us a disclaimer paragraph. You do not need to walk into the room and look ashamed.
You can literally say, “Just so you know, I’m on my period. I have a fresh tampon.”
That’s enough. That’s the whole speech. We are not waiting for a TED Talk.
This is one of those things that feels massive in your head and then becomes hilariously uneventful once you just say it out loud. We always have tampons and personal wipes available in our restroom and almost always ask if you need to use the restroom before your appointment, so feel free to freshen up right before if you need!
The Bottom Line
Yes, you can get a Brazilian wax on your period.
If you’re wearing a tampon or menstrual cup and you feel okay enough to come in, there’s usually no reason to cancel. If you know your period makes you extra sensitive, extra crampy, or generally ready to fight the moon, you might prefer to reschedule if you have the flexibility. But it is absolutely not off limits.
At Bare Beauty Wax Studio, we’ve been doing Brazilian waxes for five years and we’ve seen all of it. Periods are not shocking. Bodies are not awkward. And your appointment does not suddenly become a disaster because your cycle showed up with terrible timing.
So if your Brazilian is booked and your period decides to make a guest appearance, don’t panic. Throw in a tampon or cup, come see us, and let us handle the rest.
If you’re in Milton, Janesville, Whitewater, Fort Atkinson, Beloit, Jefferson, Lake Geneva, Evansville, or nearby and you’ve been putting off your Brazilian because you’re worried about timing, book online. We’ll help you figure it out without making it weird.
