Post Wax Mistakes We See All the Time and How to Avoid Them
There’s a very specific kind of confidence that happens right after a Brazilian wax.
You leave your appointment smooth, proud of yourself, and slightly shocked that you survived. You’re feeling fresh. You’re feeling accomplished. You’re thinking, “Wow, I really am the kind of person who gets Brazilian waxes now.”
And then, sometimes, you immediately go do something that makes your skin angry.
Not because you’re reckless. Usually. But because a lot of people treat the wax as the whole event and the aftercare as some optional little side quest that probably doesn’t matter that much.
Unfortunately, your skin disagrees.
We’re the owners of Bare Beauty Wax Studio in Milton, Wisconsin, and Brazilian waxing is one of the things we do most. We’ve been doing this for five years, which means we’ve seen the full post wax cycle more times than we can count. The smooth results. The happy regulars. The clients who stay on schedule and take care of their skin like responsible adults.
And then the other group.
The ones who get waxed and immediately go to the gym. Or the lake. Or a hot tub. Or home to aggressively exfoliate their entire bikini line like they’re sanding a deck. The ones who text us a few days later confused about why their skin is irritated after doing exactly the one thing we told them not to do.
So in the spirit of helping everyone keep their skin happy and their Brazilian results looking good, here are the post wax mistakes we see all the time and how to avoid them.
Mistake Number One: Working Out Right After Your Wax Like Nothing Happened
We know. You’re disciplined. You’re committed. You’re not about to let “a little wax” interrupt leg day.
That’s adorable.
Please do not go get a Brazilian and then immediately marinate in sweat, friction, and tight leggings for an hour while sitting on gym equipment that has seen things. Freshly waxed skin is sensitive. The follicles are open. The area has just been exfoliated, essentially against its will, and it does not need to be introduced to heat, bacteria, and repetitive rubbing five minutes later.
This is one of the fastest ways to end up irritated, inflamed, and wondering why everything feels a little angry.
We recommend avoiding workouts for 24 to 48 hours after your wax. Yes, we know that’s annoying. We also know your skin will be a lot happier if you listen.
If you absolutely have to move your body, keep it light. This is not the time for hot yoga, spin class, or a two hour hike in compression shorts.
Mistake Number Two: Going Home and Having Sex Immediately
Look, we know this one is none of our business in theory, and completely our business in practice because we’re the ones who hear about the aftermath.
Freshly waxed skin is more sensitive, more vulnerable to irritation, and not exactly thrilled by friction right after an appointment. We tell clients to avoid sex for 24 to 48 hours after a Brazilian for a reason. Not because we’re trying to ruin anyone’s evening, but because if you just had hair removed from the root and your skin is still settling down, rubbing, heat, and bacteria are not exactly ideal follow up activities.
Will the world end if you ignore this advice? Probably not.
Could your skin get irritated, feel raw, or end up with more inflammation than necessary? Absolutely.
Sometimes being responsible is deeply unsexy. We know.
Mistake Number Three: Hitting the Hot Tub, Pool, Sauna, or Bath Like You Didn’t Just Wax Your Entire Bikini Area
There is something about post wax confidence that makes people want to immediately go soak in a hot tub or spend the afternoon at the pool like they’re celebrating their own smoothness.
We’d prefer you didn’t.
Freshly waxed skin and hot tubs are not friends. Neither are saunas, steamy baths, or public pools that may or may not be doing their best. Heat can increase irritation. Sitting in water, especially public water, right after a wax is not the most skin loving choice you could make. Same goes for tanning right after an appointment. If your skin is already a little sensitive, the last thing it needs is more heat and irritation layered on top.
We recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before doing any of the above. Your skin will survive the delay, and your wax results will thank you.
Mistake Number Four: Exfoliating Way Too Soon Because You Think You’re Being Proactive
This one is such a classic.
Someone gets waxed, hears the word exfoliation, and decides to go home that night and scrub the area like they’re trying to erase their own skin.
Please don’t do that.
Exfoliation is important after a Brazilian, but not immediately after. Your skin needs a little time to calm down first. We recommend waiting 48 hours before you start exfoliating. After that, regular exfoliation two to three times a week can help prevent ingrowns and keep the skin smoother between appointments.
But the key words there are after 48 hours and regularly. Not aggressively. Not daily. Not with the rage of someone trying to remove evidence.
You can use physical exfoliation or chemical exfoliation. We genuinely don’t care which route you take if it works for your skin and you’re being consistent. We carry Lady Peng exfoliating cloths and aftercare products at Bare Beauty because we’ve seen them work really well, but the bigger point is this: be gentle and be consistent. Your skin is not a cast iron pan.
Mistake Number Five: Doing Absolutely Nothing for Aftercare and Then Acting Shocked About Ingrowns
On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have the clients who hear all the aftercare instructions, nod politely, and then proceed to do absolutely none of it.
No exfoliation. No moisturizing. No attention paid to the area whatsoever. Then a couple weeks later they’re confused about ingrowns, rough texture, or why their regrowth doesn’t feel as smooth as they expected.
Aftercare is not us being dramatic. It’s part of the process.
If you’re getting waxed regularly and you want the best results, you need to take care of the skin between appointments. That means waiting the proper 48 hours, then exfoliating regularly a few times a week and keeping the skin moisturized.
At Bare Beauty, we send first time Brazilian clients home with an aftercare kit because we want them to actually know what to do instead of just hoping for the best. We carry Lady Peng products, including an ingrown hair spray serum and moisturizing oil, because they make a real difference when clients use them consistently.
Notice the key phrase there. When clients use them consistently.
Buying the product and letting it live under your sink untouched is not the same as aftercare.
Mistake Number Six: Wearing the Tightest Outfit You Own Immediately Afterward
You know what freshly waxed skin loves? Air. Space. Peace.
You know what it doesn’t love? Tight leggings, lace underwear, stiff denim, and anything else that rubs the area nonstop for the next eight hours.
We’re not saying you need to leave your wax appointment dressed like you’ve given up on fashion. We’re saying maybe don’t choose the most restrictive outfit in your closet on the same day you just removed hair from one of the most sensitive areas of your body.
Loose, soft, breathable clothing is your friend after a Brazilian. Let the skin calm down. Let everything breathe. Give your bikini line one day where it’s not being punished by a zipper and a dream.
Mistake Number Seven: Shaving Between Appointments Because One Hair Offended You
This one physically pains us.
A client gets a Brazilian, things are going well, and then two or three weeks later one random hair pops up and suddenly they’re in the bathroom with a razor making terrible choices.
We need everyone to stop doing this.
Shaving between waxes throws off your hair growth cycle and makes your next appointment harder than it needs to be. One of the biggest reasons regular waxing gets easier over time is because the hair starts growing back in a more consistent rhythm. When you shave in between, you interrupt that whole process and basically force us to start dealing with uneven regrowth all over again.
If your goal is smoother skin, finer regrowth, and easier appointments, shaving in between is not helping. It’s just a tiny act of self sabotage disguised as problem solving.
We’re not saying you can never have a moment of weakness. We’re just saying the moment of weakness is usually not worth it.
Mistake Number Eight: Picking at Ingrowns Like You’re Performing Surgery
We understand the temptation. Truly.
You feel a bump, you see a little trapped hair, and suddenly you’re in the bathroom under bright lighting acting like you’re one YouTube tutorial away from a dermatology license.
Please leave your skin alone.
Picking, squeezing, digging, and trying to excavate ingrowns with your nails or tweezers usually makes things worse. You can irritate the skin, create more inflammation, and in some cases leave yourself with scarring or hyperpigmentation because you couldn’t let one little bump mind its business.
If you’re exfoliating regularly, keeping the skin moisturized, and using good aftercare products, a lot of those minor ingrowns will improve on their own. If you’re dealing with something more stubborn, ask us. That’s a much better plan than turning your bathroom into a crime scene.
Mistake Number Nine: Assuming Redness Means Something Is Wrong
A little redness after a Brazilian is normal. Some people stay pink for an hour. Some people stay pink longer. Some people barely react at all. Skin has personalities, unfortunately.
What we don’t want is for someone to leave their appointment, look in the mirror, see a little redness, and immediately spiral into “I think my skin is ruined.”
It’s not ruined. It just had hair ripped out from the root. Give it a second.
This is another reason we’re so picky about what you do in the first 24 to 48 hours. If the skin is already a little reactive and then you pile on friction, heat, sweat, or over exfoliation, you’re going to have a much harder time figuring out what’s normal and what you caused yourself.
Mistake Number Ten: Treating the Wax Like a One Time Event Instead of Part of a Routine
This one is less about immediate aftercare and more about long term results.
A lot of people get one Brazilian before a vacation or an event, love the results, and then disappear for three months. Then they come back and wonder why it feels like they’re starting over every time.
Because you are.
If you want waxing to get easier, smoother, and less annoying over time, consistency matters. That doesn’t mean you need to become a militant schedule person overnight, but it does mean the people who stay on a regular four to six week routine usually get better results than the people who wax once in a while and shave the rest of the year.
A Brazilian works best when you treat it like part of your maintenance, not a random emergency service.
So What Should You Do After a Brazilian?
Honestly, the answer is pretty boring. Which usually means it’s the right one.
For the first 24 to 48 hours, keep things calm. No workouts, no sex, no hot tubs, no tanning, no aggressive exfoliation, no tight clothing if you can help it. Let the skin settle down and stop acting like it didn’t just go through something.
After 48 hours, exfoliate regularly two to three times a week, keep the skin moisturized, and don’t pick at anything. If you’re using good aftercare and staying on a regular schedule, you’re already ahead of most people.
The Bottom Line
Most post wax issues are not mysterious. They’re usually the result of someone ignoring aftercare, getting impatient, or doing something their freshly waxed skin absolutely did not ask for.
The good news is that avoiding those mistakes is not complicated. Give your skin a little time, treat it like it just had a service done, and stop trying to outsmart the process.
At Bare Beauty Wax Studio, we work with Brazilian wax clients from Milton, Janesville, Whitewater, Fort Atkinson, Evansville, and surrounding areas every day, and we’d much rather help you prevent irritation than troubleshoot it after the fact.
