How to Survive Your First Brazilian Wax Without Crying or Canceling

If you have a first Brazilian wax booked and you’re currently considering canceling because you “just have a weird feeling,” we’d like to gently point out that the weird feeling is probably just panic.

Totally normal panic, to be fair. But still panic.

We’re the owners of Bare Beauty Wax Studio in Milton, Wisconsin, and if there’s one thing we know besides waxing Brazilians, it’s what nervous first time clients sound like. We hear the same version of it all the time. “I don’t know if I can do it.” “I’m scared it’s going to hurt.” “What if I freak out halfway through?” “What if it’s awkward?” “What if I hate it?”

What if you stop spiraling for five minutes.

Kidding. Kind of.

A first Brazilian wax can feel intimidating if you’ve never done it before, especially if your only reference point is TikTok dramatics, your one friend who told the story like she survived combat, or your own tendency to overthink literally everything. But the truth is, your first Brazilian does not need to be a traumatic event. You do not need to white knuckle your way through it. And you definitely do not need to cancel the appointment three hours before because your brain decided this was a threat to your survival.

So if you want to make it through your first Brazilian wax without crying, canceling, or mentally leaving your body, here’s what actually helps.

First, Stop Reading Horror Stories on the Internet

We mean this with love.

The internet is full of people who had one bad experience in 2017 and have been retelling it like it’s folklore ever since. The person who says her Brazilian “wasn’t that bad” is not writing a dramatic Reddit post about it. The person who had a mediocre wax and moved on with her life is not making a ten part TikTok series.

The people who scream the loudest online are not always the people you should be using as your emotional support group.

Does a Brazilian wax hurt a little? Yes. Obviously. We’re not going to insult your intelligence by pretending someone can rip hair out of a sensitive area and you’ll feel absolutely nothing. But pain in a Brazilian is quick, manageable, and heavily influenced by the waxer, your hair growth, and how much you’ve worked yourself up beforehand.

If you keep feeding yourself horror stories, you’re basically showing up to the appointment already convinced you’re about to be hunted for sport.

Pick a Waxer Who Does This All the Time

This matters more than almost anything else.

At Bare Beauty Wax Studio, Brazilian waxing is our thing. We’ve been doing this for five years, and at this point a Brazilian is as normal to us as waxing eyebrows. We are not awkward about bodies. We are not weird about anatomy. We are not going to make the room feel tense because you’re naked from the waist down. That kind of comfort and confidence changes the whole experience.

When your waxer knows what they’re doing, the appointment moves efficiently, the communication is clear, and the whole thing feels a lot less dramatic. That doesn’t mean it’s painless. It means it’s controlled. Which is a very different vibe than someone fumbling around and acting like your bikini line is a mystery puzzle they’ve never seen before.

Don’t Shave “Just a Little” Beforehand

This one is important because people sabotage themselves constantly.

We need enough hair to actually wax. Minimum hair length should be about the size of a grain of rice, which for most people means around three weeks after shaving. If you panic a few days before your appointment and shave “just the edges” or clean up “just a little,” congratulations, you’ve now made your first Brazilian more annoying than it needed to be.

Short hairs are harder to grab. Uneven regrowth makes the appointment less efficient. And if you trim at home because you think you’re being considerate, there’s a decent chance you’re making it harder on yourself. We prefer clients not trim at all. If anything needs trimming, we’ll do it.

Your only job before the appointment is to let the hair exist. That’s it.

Wear Something That Doesn’t Make You Hate Your Life Afterward

This is not the day for tight lace underwear, skinny jeans, or any outfit that aggressively rubs your freshly waxed skin like it has a personal vendetta.

Wear something soft and comfortable. Loose pants, joggers, a dress, whatever works. Think “my skin just went through something” and dress accordingly. You don’t need to show up in pajamas, but this is not the appointment to prove you can suffer for fashion.

Show Up Clean and Hydrated, Not Like You’re Heading Into Surgery

You don’t need a 12 step pre-wax ritual. Just basic common sense.

Take a shower. Avoid caffeine. Drink water. Don’t come in sweaty from a workout if you can help it. You do not need to exfoliate aggressively that morning, apply numbing cream you found online, or perform any kind of ceremonial cleansing routine. In fact, overdoing it usually makes things worse.

A clean body and realistic expectations will take you a lot further than trying to prepare for your appointment like you’re going into battle.

Let Us Tell You What to Do With Your Body

One of the things that makes first time clients nervous is not knowing how to position themselves. They’re worried they’ll somehow be bad at getting waxed, which is a sentence that should not exist, and yet here we are.

You do not need to know what to do. We’ll tell you.

At Bare Beauty, we walk you through everything. We’ll tell you where to put your legs, when to shift, and how to help pull your skin taut. That last part matters a lot. Having clients help hold the skin tight makes the wax more comfortable and more effective. It’s not us trying to make you work during your appointment. It genuinely helps.

And if you feel awkward, that’s okay. You’re allowed to feel awkward. But we promise the awkwardness fades pretty fast once you realize this is all way more routine than you expected. Also, we will talk your ear off so you won’t even have time to worry about feeling awkward.

Breathe Like a Functional Adult

You would be amazed how many people stop breathing during a Brazilian.

Actually, maybe you wouldn’t. Maybe you’re already planning to do exactly that.

Please don’t.

Holding your breath makes you tense up, and tension makes everything feel worse. We’ll coach you through breathing during the appointment because yes, it actually helps. We’ll tell you when to take a breath, when to exhale, and when to relax the leg you forgot you were clenching like your life depended on it.

No one is expecting you to be a zen queen on the table. It’s actually kinda insane if you don’t have a small puddle of sweat in your lower back your first time with us. But if you can breathe, listen, and not actively fight the process, you’re already helping yourself a lot and YOU. CAN. DO. THIS. We can help.

Let Us Distract You

We talk to clients during Brazilians on purpose. Not because we love multitasking, although we do, but because distraction genuinely helps.

Sometimes we’ll ask about your plans for the weekend. Sometimes we’ll ask how you found us. Sometimes we’ll tell you a random story. Sometimes we’ll just keep the conversation moving so your brain doesn’t have a chance to focus on every single second of the appointment.

We also have a few tricks up our sleeve that come from doing this all day for years. We’re not giving away the trade secrets, but just know we’re not winging it.

Understand That the First One Is the Hardest

We don’t say that to scare you. We say it because it’s helpful.

Your first Brazilian is usually the most uncomfortable because the hair is stronger, the roots haven’t been weakened by regular waxing yet, and your brain is acting like this is a hostage situation. That doesn’t mean it’s awful. It just means it’s new.

The good news is that if you stick with waxing on a regular four to six week schedule, it gets easier. The hair grows back softer and finer, there’s usually less of it, and the appointment becomes way more routine. Maintenance appointments are quicker, easier, and honestly kind of uneventful compared to the mental circus of the first one.

So if the first wax feels like a big deal, that’s okay. It won’t always feel that way.

Don’t Immediately Go Ruin Your Skin Afterward

You survived the wax. Great. Now don’t go home and immediately do everything we tell you not to do.

Freshly waxed skin is sensitive. For the first 24 to 48 hours, skip the workout, the hot tub, the long bath, the tanning, and anything else that’s going to irritate the area. Give your skin a minute to calm down and remember who she is.

After 48 hours, start exfoliating regularly two to three times a week to help prevent ingrowns and keep things smooth. We carry Lady Peng products at Bare Beauty and send first time Brazilian clients home with an aftercare kit because aftercare actually matters. This is not us being dramatic. It makes a real difference in how your skin heals and how your next wax goes. 20% of your results are on us, 80% are on you.

Don’t Cancel Just Because You’re Nervous

This is the part we really want to say to every first timer who’s hovering over the cancellation button.

Being nervous does not mean you shouldn’t do it. It means you’re doing something new. That’s it.

You do not need to wait until you feel completely fearless, perfectly prepared, or spiritually aligned with the idea of a Brazilian wax. If you do that, you’ll be shaving forever and complaining about it the whole time.

If you’ve done the basic prep, you’ve got enough hair, and you’ve booked with people who know what they’re doing, then the rest is just letting yourself have the experience and realize it’s not nearly as big of a deal as you thought.

That’s usually how this goes. People build it up for weeks, show up convinced they’re going to die, then sit up afterward and say, “Okay, that was actually fine.”

Exactly.

So, How Do You Survive Your First Brazilian Wax?

Honestly? You stop treating it like a life threatening event.

You let the hair grow. You wear something comfortable. You show up clean. You listen when we tell you how to help pull the skin taut. You breathe like a person who enjoys oxygen. You let us distract you. And most importantly, you stop assuming the worst before anything has even happened.

At Bare Beauty Wax Studio, we work with first time Brazilian clients from Milton, Janesville, Whitewater, Fort Atkinson, Evansville, and surrounding areas all the time. Nervous clients are not a problem for us. They’re normal. That’s part of the job. Our goal is not just to get the wax done. It’s to make you feel comfortable enough that you stop dreading the next one before the first one is even over.

So if you’ve been thinking about booking, this is your sign to stop hovering over the cancel button and just come in.

We’ve got you. Book online, and we’ll handle the rest.
