Is a Brazilian Wax Embarrassing?

What to Expect on Your First Visit

Let’s just get this out of the way: you might feel a little embarrassed at first. We won’t.

If you’ve never had a Brazilian wax before, the idea of walking into a room, taking your pants off, and letting a stranger get very up close and personal can feel… less than ideal.

We get it.

But while this might be a brand-new and slightly terrifying experience for you, for us? It’s just another day at work.

We’re licensed estheticians. We wax Brazilians all day long. There is genuinely nothing happening down there that is going to shock us.

“But What If I Haven’t Shaved in Forever?”

Perfect. Please don’t.

One of the biggest things first-time clients worry about is having “too much” hair. They’ll apologize for it. They’ll tell us they almost trimmed it. Sometimes they actually do trim it and then immediately regret telling us because we give them the look.

Hair is kind of the whole reason you’re here.

For waxing, we need your hair to be at least about the length of a grain of rice. If you’ve been shaving, that usually means letting it grow for around three weeks before your appointment.

And if it’s longer than it needs to be? Leave it alone. We can trim it if necessary.

You do not need to groom yourself for your waxer before coming in to get groomed. That defeats the purpose a little, doesn’t it?

“Are You Judging What I Look Like Down There?”

No.

And we mean that in the nicest possible way: we do not care.

Bodies are bodies. Everyone looks different. Skin looks different. Hair grows differently. People have scars, stretch marks, loose skin, cellulite, discoloration, bumps, ingrown hairs, asymmetry and approximately one million other completely normal human things.

We are not comparing you to the person before you.

We are not going home and discussing your anatomy over dinner.

We are thinking about getting the hair off efficiently, keeping your skin happy and making this significantly less awkward than you imagined it would be.

That’s pretty much it.

So… How Naked Am I?

For a Brazilian wax, everything from the waist down comes off.

Yes, including underwear.

We know that sentence may have just made a few first-timers reconsider the entire appointment, but underwear actually makes our job harder. A Brazilian removes hair from the front and the back, and we need to be able to properly see and access the skin we’re waxing.

You’ll have privacy to undress before we come back into the room.

And once we get started, it becomes surprisingly normal surprisingly fast.

What Positions Do You Have to Get Into?

Nothing nearly as dramatic as your imagination has probably created.

We’ll tell you exactly where we need your legs and when. You don’t need to show up knowing Brazilian wax positions or somehow practice beforehand.

We also have clients help us hold their skin taut during parts of the service. This helps us work efficiently and can make waxing more comfortable.

And yes, we wax the backside too.

No, you do not need to get on all fours.

We promise this is much less scandalous than the internet makes it sound.

What If I’m Sweaty?

Also normal.

Especially if you’re nervous.

We’re working in an area of the body that gets warm. Nobody expects you to arrive looking like you just stepped out of a sterile laboratory.

If you’re coming straight from work or just want to freshen up beforehand, that’s completely fine. We also keep personal wipes available in our restroom.

Normal hygiene is plenty. You do not need to perform an elaborate pre-Brazilian ritual.

What If I’m on My Period?

You can still come.

Periods do not make us uncomfortable either. If you’re comfortable being waxed, we’re comfortable waxing you.

We just ask that you wear a tampon during the service. And if your period decides to show up unexpectedly, we keep tampons and personal wipes in our restroom because apparently uteruses do not check appointment calendars.

One thing to keep in mind: some people are a little more sensitive around their period, so your wax may feel slightly spicier than usual.

The Awkwardness Usually Lasts About 30 Seconds

This is probably the part people are most surprised by.

You build the appointment up in your head for days. Maybe weeks.

Then you get here, take your pants off, we start talking, and suddenly you’re telling us about your boyfriend, your job, your kids, your divorce, the weird thing your mother-in-law said last weekend or some other information you absolutely did not intend to share with us.

It happens.

Your first Brazilian appointment with us is booked for 30 minutes because we want enough time to explain what we’re doing, answer questions and walk you through aftercare without rushing you.

After that, maintenance Brazilians are booked for 20 minutes and often take even less time.

So the thing you spent three weeks stressing about may be over before you know it.

You Are Allowed to Be Nervous

We don’t expect first-time clients to stroll in completely unfazed.

Tell us you’re nervous.

Ask the weird question.

Tell us if you need a second.

Laugh because you suddenly realize how ridiculous the entire situation feels.

We’ll tell you when to breathe, have you help us keep the skin taut, distract you with conversation and use a few other tricks we’ve picked up after doing a whole lot of Brazilians.

Our job isn’t just to remove the hair. It’s to make the experience feel as comfortable and normal as possible.

So, Is Getting a Brazilian Wax Embarrassing?

It can feel embarrassing when you’ve never done it before.

But there’s a big difference between feeling embarrassed and actually having something to be embarrassed about.

You don’t.

We’ve seen hair. We’ve seen bodies. We’ve seen periods. We’ve seen sweat. We’ve seen ingrowns. We’ve seen people come in terrified and leave wondering why they made such a big deal about it.

You do not need to look a certain way before getting a Brazilian wax.

You just need enough hair for us to wax.

If you’ve been putting off your first Brazilian because you’re nervous about the awkward part, come see us at Bare Beauty Wax Studio in Milton, Wisconsin. We have clients who visit us from Janesville, Beloit, Jefferson, Lake Geneva, Whitewater, Fort Atkinson, Madison and the surrounding area, and first-timers are absolutely welcome.

We promise: it’s way weirder for you than it is for us.
