What Actually Happens During a Brazilian Wax at Bare Beauty Wax Studio
If you’ve never had a Brazilian wax before, there’s a good chance you’ve built the whole thing up in your head into some dramatic, deeply awkward event where you don’t know where to look, what to do with your hands, or whether you’re supposed to pretend this is all very normal while internally blacking out.
We get it. We really do.
A first time Brazilian is one of those appointments people overthink for weeks, sometimes months, because it feels so personal. You’re walking into a room, taking your pants off, and trusting a stranger with hot wax in a very sensitive area. On paper, it sounds unhinged. In real life, it’s much less dramatic than your brain is trying to make it.
We’re the owners of Bare Beauty Wax Studio in Milton, Wisconsin, and Brazilian waxing is our specialty. We’ve been doing this for five years, and at this point a Brazilian wax is as routine to us as waxing eyebrows. That’s not us trying to sound cool. It’s just the truth. We see bodies all day. Anatomy does not surprise us. Your appointment is not going to be weird unless someone makes it weird, and we don’t.
So if you’ve been wondering what actually happens during a Brazilian wax at Bare Beauty Wax Studio, here’s the honest walkthrough.
First, You Book the Appointment and Probably Start Overthinking Immediately
That part is normal.
Most first time clients are at least a little nervous before they come in. Some are mildly anxious. Some are pretending they’re chill while googling “how bad does a Brazilian wax hurt” in the parking lot. Some have been shaving forever, are sick of it, and are finally ready to just rip the band aid off. Literally.
If it’s your first Brazilian with us, your appointment is booked for 30 minutes. Maintenance appointments are shorter, but first time appointments get more time because we know you probably have questions, we know you may need a little extra reassurance, and we want enough time to explain things without making you feel rushed.
We’re not interested in making a first timer feel like they’re on an assembly line. That’s not how we do things.
You Show Up, We Get You Checked In, and We Talk
When you get to Bare Beauty, we’re not immediately throwing wax at you. We’ll get you checked in, go over any questions, and talk through the basics of the appointment.
If it’s your first wax ever, we’ll ask a few things about your hair growth, your skin, and when you last shaved. Hair length matters. For a Brazilian wax, we want at least about a grain of rice worth of growth, which for most people means around three weeks after shaving. If you’ve got that, great. If not, we’ll be honest with you.
We also tell first time clients not to trim before their appointment. We know people mean well when they do it. We also know it usually creates more problems than it solves. If anything needs trimming, we’ll take care of it. That’s part of our job. Please do not stand in your bathroom with tiny scissors trying to “help.” You’re not helping. You’re making it weird.
We’ll also talk through what a Brazilian actually includes and answer any questions before you get on the table. If you’re nervous, this is usually the point where we can tell, and honestly, that’s fine. You do not need to pretend to be a waxing veteran. We know when someone is internally spiraling.
Then Yes, You Take Your Pants Off
There’s no glamorous way to say it, so we won’t.
Once we’ve gone over everything, we’ll instruct you to undress from the waist down and get comfortable on the table. We stay in the room during this because lying half naked on a table all by yourself is..weird. We will turn our back and get ourselves prepared while we launch into conversation, immediately getting to know you and hopefully put you at ease. When you’re lying down and ready for us to begin, we will talk you through how to position yourself.
This is the part people build up the most in their heads, and we wish we could somehow transfer our brain into yours for five seconds so you could feel how incredibly normal this is to us. A Brazilian wax is not a shocking event in our day. We are not standing there thinking about the fact that you are naked from the waist down. We are thinking about your hair growth, your skin, and how to get you the best result with the least amount of discomfort.
That’s it.
We always say that doing a Brazilian is like waxing eyebrows to us at this point. Different body part, same level of emotional reaction. Which is to say, none.
We Cleanse the Skin and Get Everything Prepped
Before any waxing starts, we prep the area. Clean skin matters, and so does making sure everything is set up properly before we begin.
We use both hard and soft wax depending on the area and what your skin and hair need. Not every part of a Brazilian is exactly the same, and not every client’s hair grows the same way, so we don’t force one method to do every job. Sometimes one wax makes more sense for one section and a different wax makes more sense for another. That’s part of experience. We’re not guessing and hoping for the best.
This is also the point where the nerves usually kick up a little if you’re new. You realize the appointment is officially happening, and suddenly you’re very aware that you willingly signed up for this.
Again, normal.
We Start the Wax, and We Talk You Through It
Once we start, we don’t just silently attack you with wax and expect you to cope. We tell you what we’re doing, and if you’re a first timer, we’ll guide you through the whole thing.
One of the biggest things we have clients do during a Brazilian is help us pull their skin taut. It makes a huge difference in comfort and in how cleanly the hair comes out. We’ll tell you exactly where to place your hands and when to pull. You do not need to know this ahead of time. We’ve got you.
We’ll also coach your breathing. Yes, really. Because a lot of people hold their breath without realizing it, and that makes everything feel worse. So if we tell you to take a breath, exhale, and relax your leg, it’s not because we’re trying to be motivational speakers. It’s because it genuinely helps.
And then there’s the distraction factor. We talk. A lot. Sometimes we’ll ask about your weekend. Sometimes we’ll ask where you’re from. Sometimes we’ll tell you a story because if your brain is busy listening, it has less time to panic about what’s happening. It’s not an accident. We know what we’re doing. Also, I haven’t lived a wild and crazy life to NOT tell people about it.
We also have a few other tricks up our sleeves after years of doing this, and no, we’re not giving away all our secrets.
Is It Awkward Positioning? A Little. Is It Manageable? Absolutely.
At some point during a Brazilian, we may have you shift positions slightly so we can get everything clean and even. That might mean dropping one knee out to the side a bit, adjusting your legs, or turning over briefly depending on what we’re doing and what kind of result you want.
And yes, we know that sounds awkward when you’ve never done it before.
In practice, it’s very straightforward. We’ll tell you exactly what to do, and it takes about two seconds to realize it’s not a big deal. Nobody’s asking you to perform a yoga sequence. We’re just trying to access all the hair properly without turning this into a scavenger hunt.
This is another place where people expect to feel wildly uncomfortable and usually end up thinking, “Oh. That was it?”
The Appointment Goes Faster Than You Think
This is one of the biggest surprises for first time clients. They expect the appointment to feel endless, and then suddenly we’re telling them we’re almost done.
A first time Brazilian is booked for 30 minutes, but that includes talking, explaining, checking in, and going over aftercare. The actual waxing part is much quicker than most people expect. Maintenance Brazilians are booked for 20 minutes and often take less than that.
That’s one of the benefits of seeing waxers who do this constantly. We’re efficient, but not rushed. There’s a difference. Efficient means we know what we’re doing and we don’t waste your time or drag out the uncomfortable parts. Rushed means you feel like cattle being processed. Not our vibe.
Once We’re Done, We Clean Things Up and Go Over Aftercare
When the wax is finished, we clean up the area, check for anything that needs touching up, and make sure your skin looks good before you hop off the table.
Then we go over aftercare.
This is the part people love to mentally skip because once the wax is over they’re ready to move on with their lives, but aftercare really does matter if you want the best results. We’ll tell you what to avoid for the next 24 to 48 hours, like workouts, hot tubs, tanning, and anything else that’s going to irritate freshly waxed skin. After that, we’ll talk about exfoliating regularly to help prevent ingrowns and keep things smooth.
If you’re a first time Brazilian client at Bare Beauty, we also send you home with an aftercare kit. That includes products we actually like and use in our studio, not random junk tossed in a bag to make it look like you got a bonus. We carry Lady Peng and Just the Strip products, including ingrown hair spray serum, a moisturizing oil, and exfoliating cloths, because they genuinely help keep the skin calm and happy between appointments. They are formulated by waxers, specifically for use after waxing or shaving.
We’re not trying to make your first wax feel like a one and done thing. We’re trying to set you up so the next one goes even better.
Then You Leave and Realize It Wasn’t Nearly as Big of a Deal as You Thought
This is the part we love.
The post wax moment when someone sits up, looks slightly confused, and says some version of, “Wait… that was actually fine.”
Yes. We know.
Not painless. We’re not liars. But manageable. Quick. Way less dramatic than expected. And once you’ve done it once, the mystery is gone. You know what the appointment feels like, you know what to expect, and the next time is so much easier mentally.
That’s why so many first timers become regulars. Not because they suddenly love having hair ripped out, but because the payoff is worth it and the appointment itself is never as awful as they imagined.
Why Clients Keep Coming Back to Bare Beauty
We have clients who drive to us from Janesville, Whitewater, Fort Atkinson, Evansville, and surrounding areas because they want Brazilian waxers who specialize in this service and know how to make people feel comfortable without making the whole thing weird.
We’re honest. We’re calm. We’re experienced. We’re not going to baby you, but we’re also not going to throw you into a vulnerable appointment with zero guidance and act confused when you’re nervous. We know this service can feel intimidating the first time, and we know exactly how to walk people through it in a way that feels grounded and low stress.
That’s the whole point.
So… Should You Book One?
If you’ve been thinking about it, yes. Probably.
If you’re tired of shaving, tired of irritation, or just tired of building this up in your head like it’s some life altering event, book the appointment. A Brazilian wax at Bare Beauty Wax Studio is not a dramatic rite of passage. It’s a professional service done by two licensed estheticians who have seen everything and think none of it is weird.
You don’t need to show up fearless. You don’t need to know what to do. You don’t need to be “good” at getting waxed. You just need enough hair, a little trust, and a willingness to let us do what we do all day.
If you’re in Milton, Janesville, Whitewater, Fort Atkinson, Evansville, or nearby, book online and we’ll take it from there.
